1 It must have been a little later that I read “With Kitchener to Khartoum,” “From Capetown to Ladysmith” and the other books of George W. Steevens, of the London Mail. They made a powerful impression on me, and I still believe that Steevens was the greatest newspaper reporter who ever lived.

2 When he quit the Herald Max went into politics, and lived to be one of the Democratic bosses of Baltimore. But the first time he ran for elective office he was beaten, mainly, so it was reported, because many voters assumed from his name that he was a Jew, and others suspected that he might even be a Chinaman. He was actually of Scotch-Irish, Welsh, English and Pennsylvania German stock. He later married the charming secretary of the Governor of Maryland, and became the father of a son and a daughter who followed him into the newspaper business. He died in 1923.
